Pre-Painting Preparation

Preparation is key to a successful painting job. It may seem tempting to skip right to the painting part, but spending time on prep work will ensure your paint adheres properly and looks fantastic when you're done. Here's what you need to do:

Satin and eggshell finishes provide a soft glow and work well for living rooms and bedrooms. Matte or flat paint offers a sophisticated look but is less resistant to marks and stains.

Surface Preparation: A smooth, clean surface is paramount for a professional-looking paint job. Start by removing any loose or flaking paint from the walls. You can use a paint scraper or sandpaper for this task.

Next, clean the walls to remove any dust, grease, or mildew. Mild soapy water usually does the trick, but for tougher stains or mildew, a solution of bleach and water might be necessary. Allow the walls to dry completely before you proceed.

If your walls have cracks or holes, fill them using a filling compound and a putty knife. Once the filler is dry, sand the area until it's smooth and flush with the rest of the wall.

Always follow the safety instructions on the paint cans, especially when it comes to proper ventilation while painting.
