The Painting Process

Now that your walls are prepped and ready, it's time for the fun part – painting! Here are the key steps to achieving a professional-looking paint job:

Cutting In: Cutting in refers to painting the edges of the wall with a brush before using a roller on larger areas. This technique helps create a clean edge, especially around doors, windows, and trim. Start at a corner of the room and paint a straight line along the edge of the trim with a 2 to 2.5-inch angled brush. Try to keep the layer of paint as even as possible to avoid visible lines once the rest of the wall is painted.

Roller Painting: Once you've cut in around the edges, it's time to paint the larger areas with a roller. Start by loading your roller evenly with paint from your tray or bucket.

Begin painting in a 'W' or 'M' pattern, this helps distribute the majority of the paint across the largest area. Once you've done this, without reloading the roller, fill in the remaining unpainted areas using horizontal or vertical strokes. Always try to keep a wet edge, meaning you overlap the edges of the previously painted areas before the paint has dried. This helps to avoid streaks or lines.

Remember, it's usually better to apply two or more thin coats of paint rather than one thick one. Allow the first coat to dry completely (according to the manufacturer's instructions) before applying a second coat.

Painting Details and Trims: When painting window frames, door frames, baseboards, or other trims, use a smaller brush for precision. If you're painting them a different color, use painter's tape to protect your freshly painted walls.

Ensure that the paint is applied evenly and smoothly. For narrow surfaces, consider using the 'long stroke' technique, where you load the brush with paint and apply it in a single, long stroke. This helps prevent overlapping brush marks.
